What’s the difference between a symphony and a concerto?

Hey, even Yo-Yo Ma asked those questions once upon a time. The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is pleased to offer all its subscribers their very own Symphony 101. It’s designed for those who wish to enhance their symphony-going experience, just by understanding what it’s all about.

Hosted by ESO Music Resource D.T. Baker, Symphony 101 goes back to the basics. In a lively and fun session, get some background as to what all that information on a symphony program actually means. Bach was Baroque, and Berlioz a Romantic – so what? This is your chance to find out. And best of all, every series gets its own, customized Symphony 101!

With musical excerpts from the ESO’s 2010/2011 season, each Symphony 101 will be interactive as well as informative. Feel free to ask the questions you might have been too shy to ask before – and it’s free!

There’s a separate Symphony 101 for nearly every ESO subscriber series, and each will cover the music, and many of the terms and forms you’ll encounter in the programs – and the program notes – of your series. The program is offered to ESO subscribers at no cost, but you do need to register with us.
